Nutrition Tips To Help With Psoriasis

By | December 2, 2016

Psoriasis is a skin condition in which the body overproduces skin cells, resulting in red, blotchy, scaly and sometimes itchy skin. Medicines and creams are commonly prescribed to relieve symptoms. However, choosing certain foods help treat the condition

Eat More produce
Researchers at the University of Milan in Italy conducted a study with 680 people and found that participants who ate more carrots, tomatoes were fresh fruits and green vegetables less likely to suffer from psoriasis symptoms. They found that eating three or more servings of carrots can reduce psoriasis symptoms by 40 percent. Eat seven or more servings of tomatoes can reduce symptoms by 60 percent, and two daily servings of fresh fruit may reduce symptoms by 50 percent.

Include at least one serving of fruit and vegetables with every meal or snack Top your morning oatmeal with a cup of blueberries or add a cup of steamed vegetables for lunch. A quick way to get a serving of vegetables is to buy frozen pre-cut vegetables without sauce. Pop a cup in the microwave, and they are ready to eat in minutes.

Go Fish
A British study concluded that people who ate 6 oz. salmon and mackerel for six weeks had a 15 percent improvement in psoriasis symptoms. The omega-3 fatty acids in most cold water fish reduce inflammation caused by the body’s production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Salmon is especially high in omega-3 fatty acids and can provide relief when collaborating as usual with psoriasis medications.

Bring fish entree once or twice a week to get omega-3 fatty acids. Grill or broil salmon with plenty of lemon and dill for dinner, or top a bowl of linguine with chunks of smoked salmon.

Beets Beat Psoriasis
beet juice can relieve pain and itching from psoriasis. According to Cherie Calbom, MS, certified nutritionist and author of “Juicing for Life,” many people living with psoriasis have congestion in the intestines and liver. She explains that a high-fiber diet will detoxify the liver, and that beet juice is the perfect detoxifier. Calbom recommends drinking one glass of beet juice one day combined with carrot juice and lemon for extra flavor.
