Determine what time of day you want to eat and how often you should eat. Some people prefer to stick with the traditional three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). But many believe that it is better to eat 5 to 6 smaller meals throughout the day to keep your metabolism going and to remove cravings for snacks.

Create a diet plan that suits your needs. Your diet should consist of a variety of healthy foods, including fruits, grains and vegetables. You should reduce saturated fat, sugar and carbohydrate intake by reducing the amount of desserts, red meat, white bread, pasta and soda you consume. Try to eat foods that are less fattening and higher in protein (such as poultry, eggs, fish, beans, peas and nuts).

Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Be sure to add a variety of fruits and vegetables to your diet plan and follow the proper serving size. For example, 1 serving size of fruit or vegetable equivalent of about 1 medium-size piece of fruit (apple, orange, etc.), 1/4 cup of dried fruit or 1 cup raw, leafy vegetables. There are many different kinds of fruits such as whole, dried cut-up fresh ,, canned and frozen.

Take 2-3 servings of dairy products in your diet. This may include items such as milk, cheese and yogurt, as a cup of milk or yogurt, 1 1/2 grams of natural cheese. Make sure you choose low-fat dairy products.

Drink plenty of water daily. You should drink eight glasses (8 oz. In size) of water each day. Water is good for you because it keeps the body clean, flushes out the body and gets rid of toxins and waste. Drinking water also reduces fluid retention in the body. You may need to consume more water if you are physically active, pregnant or heavier in size.
