Light to moderate exercise might be best for weight loss because while it promotes better health and not burning calories, it does not seem to induce hunger associated with strenuous exercise. This would make exercises like walking and swimming the best choices while calorie count.

Calorie counting is about numbers. The American Dietetic Association website has a calculator where you can input your height, body frame age and weight. It will tell you how many calories you need to maintain your weight.


To lose 1 kg you must remove 3,500 calories from your body. If you reduce your daily calorie consumption by 500 calories, you will lose 1 kg per week. The American Medical Association says that a weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week is safe. The American Dietetic Association encourages people to consume at least 1,000 calories per day. They caution that any lower than that can cause your metabolism to drop.


By cutting between 500 and 1,000 calories a day, you will have an average weight loss of between 1 and 2 pounds per week. Initially, you may lose a little more while your body adjusts to the limited calories. You can eat what you want in a calorie counting diet as long as you live on or under the allotted calories.

3-Day Diet
One popular calorie counting diet, this diet is very restrictive on alternate days as opposed to every day. The recommended calorie count for limited days is 800 calories. This works because the next day you can consume more calories, so your metabolism does not drop.


The weekly average weight loss for this diet is between 5 and 8 pounds. It is popular not only because of the results, but also because most people can postpone eating their favorite food for a day.
