Although it is not always easy, we must ensure that we maintain a well-balanced diet to give your body the vitamins to maintain good health. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, so it is especially important children receive adequate amounts. If a child suffers from a vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets and increase the risk of developing osteoporosis as she gets older. If you suspect your child has a vitamin D deficiency, look for the following signs and talk to your doctor
Notice the child’s sleep habits. Poor sleep habits and restlessness can both be signs of a vitamin D deficiency.
Look for bent legs, often referred to as knock knees, after weight-bearing activities start. When a child starts standing and walking it is easier to softening of the bones caused by the defect.
Talk to your doctor if you notice that your child exhibits delayed sitting, crawling or walking activities.
Does the doctor perform an x-ray of the child’s leg bones if you suspect rickets. This bone condition will usually go away after a few months of treatment that includes vitamin D supplements.
Look for signs of profuse sweating. All children sweat regularly, but if there is much this may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency.
Tips and Warnings
Exposure to sunlight is one of the easiest ways to increase vitamin D intake. Just 10 or 15 minutes a few times a week is all it takes. If you’re going to be out longer, be sure to use a good sunscreen.
