Tumeric, also spelled turmeric is a spice made from the root of Curcuma longa plant. This spice has long been appreciated in various Indian and Chinese cultures for its health benefits. Tumeric contains the active ingredient curcumin, which offers both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Here are some easy ways to add tumeric to your diet
Cooking with Tumeric
Spice up your dishes by adding some turmeric. This spice has a warm, bitter and slightly peppery flavor that is mild and unobtrusive when added to food. Just add a teaspoon of tumeric to soups, beans, vegetable dishes, canned soups, rice dishes and stews.
Saute your vegetables with turmeric. You can spice up onions, cauliflower and peppers by sauteing them with a dash of turmeric powder.
Add turmeric to chili, marinara and pasta sauces. Tumeric distinctive flavor will be absorbed by the tomatoes. This is an easy way to add tumeric to your diet if you do not care for the taste.
Put a little turmeric in sauces. Tumeric is already in mustard, then add a little more should not be noticeable. You can also add a teaspoon tumeric to ketchup, salad dressings and mayonnaise.

Take tumeric supplements. If you do not like the taste of tumeric spice or find it difficult to cook with, you can buy turmeric supplements at health food stores. You should take 450 mg. of tumeric every day to get spice full nutritional benefits.
Make sure you use turmeric powder and not curry powder. While tumeric is the main ingredient in curry powder, is pure tumeric healthier than when it has been mixed with other spices. Use organic tumeric powder if possible.
Check your consumption of turmeric if you are taking any blood-thinning medications, including aspirin. Tumeric affects the body’s blood clotting abilities. Check with your doctor before adding tumeric to your diet.
Note that tumeric lightly stained surfaces. Wash counters and cutting boards that come in contact with spices. Use kitchen gloves when handling tumeric so the skin does not stain.
